Welcome to my lair, Mr. Bond

Just kidding! This amazing structure may look like the secret hideout of a James Bond or Thunderbirds villain, but in fact it is an underwater observation tower. Built in 1972, it is one of the last structures of its kind in Japan. From the portholes at the bottom of the tower, which is about 7 meters underwater, you can see the sea life of the Tatsukushi Coast freely swimming by. Lucky visitors may even catch a glimpse of the sea turtles that make their home around this protected coast.

The Ashizuri Underwater Observation Tower has captured the imagination of media around the world, and was even chosen as one of Atlas Obscura's Favorite Places in 2019!
