First open in 1993, the Museum of Art in Kochi has held numerous exhibits over the years, putting on display the works of local artists, as well as those of contemporary artists from abroad. The museum’s permanent collections include the Ishimoto Yasuhiro Photo Center, which celebrates the works of the eponymous photographer from Kochi who studied photography technique at the Institute of Design in Chicago.
Ishimoto is particularly praised for his shots of the Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, which wonderfully capture its modernist architecture. And speaking of works of art, one can’t fail to mention the museum itself, built using architectural techniques and local materials such as “Tosa plaster”. Moreover, there is a shallow body of water going around its circumference, creating the illusion that the museum is floating on water!
