Koinobori

The beautiful 500 Koinobori swimming on Shimanto River!

From April to May each year, more than 500 colorful koi carp streamers, Koinobori in Japanese, are let loose in the wind over Shimanto River.

The custom of flying carp streamers is well-known all over Japan, and Koinobori symbolize the wishes of success and health for young boys.

But you should know that the Shimanto River region is the birthplace of the tradition of flying very large groups of carp streamers over a river!

This practice was born to cheer up the boys of the region, after one of them said that it was a pity that their families no longer flew Koinobori for them once they started to grow up.

Definitely a must-see, if you happen to be in Kochi during this period!
