Kappa Museum

This whimsical museum in the heart of rural Shimanto in western Kochi is not only home to the mythical kappa, it’s home to over 1,000 kappa! Kappa are legendary cucumber-loving water imps that can be seen as either mischievous or downright mean. An annual kappa contest has contributed numerous winners and runners-up to the museum collection, from chainsaw-carved tree trunk kappa to clay-based creatures. Take time to look through the nooks and crannies of the building—you may even find kappa hiding beneath your feet.

In the rear of the museum, an old historic farmhouse stands as a rest area for kappa on pilgrimage. The roof was completed by the only remaining thatcher in Kochi Prefecture.

Browse the shop to find the perfect kappa-themed souvenir to take home with you or participate in one of the museum workshops to make your own kappa memorabilia.
