The 196-kilometer Shimanto River starts as a mere stream that emerges from the slopes of Mt. Irazu (about 1.5 hours from Kochi City by car). From there, the Shimanto–Japan’s last free-flowing river–grows in size and grandeur along its many twists and turns, eventually flowing into the Pacific Ocean
There are many ways to enjoy the Shimanto River, such as gliding over its limpid waters in a yakatabune (traditional leisure boat), taking the short but rewarding trail to the source of the river, or devouring charcoal-grilled wild unagi (eel) caught straight from the crystal-clear river
