A full Kochi immersion…on a train!
There’s no doubt people in Japan love trains (including me)! From leisurely to high-speed, there are numerous types but today, I would like to introduce Kochi’s luxury sightseeing train that perhaps has the most poetic and elegant name. Welcome aboard the “Shikoku Tosa Toki no Yoakeno Monogatari” (meaning “Tale of the Dawn of an Era”)
When it comes to this train, the attention to detail is impeccable. Here are some of the many aspects that immerse you in Kochi’s rich history, culture, and art
Tosa washi
Look out for fittings featuring locally made traditional Japanese paper called Tosa washi. It’s a craft that has existed in Ino Town, for example, for more than 1,000 years! Featured in the lampshades, coasters, and cup holders on board, you can feel the elegance and versatility of the handmade material up close.
Shimanto hinoki
One of the onboard meals (prior reservations required) is served in bento boxes beautifully crafted using hinoki (Japanese cypress) grown around the Shimanto River area. After savoring every delicious bite of your meal, observe the wood's cozy light color and refreshing aroma–all straight from Kochi’s majestic forests.
Glassware
Even the chopstick rests have a little local story. Molded in a way that resembles the arch shape of Kochi Prefecture, the deep blue color and beams of light inside the glass represent the underwater world of Tosa Bay (which you can see during the train’s journey).
