There are so many reasons why I would recommend any visitor to venture out of Kochi City during their trip here. Of course, how you wish to spend your travels depends entirely on your preferences, but there is so much beauty and oftentimes unexpected surprises to be found in the countryside. So, today, we’re going on an adventure to the southernmost coast of Kochi Prefecture, home to one of Japan’s largest coral reefs!
The best way to explore the underwater world (without getting wet) at Tatsukushi Marine Park is to take the 30 to 50-minute trip on a glass-bottom boat cruise. It is truly stunning and humbling as well, to see the sheer diversity of colorful fish and immensity of the mammoth coral reef clusters. The boat will also take you to Minokoshi Coast where you’ll find surreal rock formations that date back millions of years, created by strong winds, waves and earthquakes
If you’re looking for a place to rest, grab lunch or buy authentically local souvenirs, head over to Michi no Eki Mejika no Sato, located just a 5-minute drive from the port where you’ll get on and off the glass-bottom boat
Fresh sea bream topped on fluffy rice, soup made with aromatic flakes of smoked frigate tuna (sodabushi), rich vanilla soft-serve ice cream using local sun-dried salt and so much more, Michi no Eki Mejika no Sato showcases the rich food culture of Tosashimizu
Special thanks to Tosashimizu Geopark (@土佐清水ジオパーク) for letting us share their photo of Michi no Eki Mejika no Sato!
