Kochi City’s beloved Sunday Market has been going on pretty much every weekend for over 300 years! No blazing summer heat, chilly winter breeze or pouring rain will stop the locals from gathering at the heart of the city to offer delicious goodies (well, unless it’s a typhoon or other dangerous weather! Safety first)
On this particular rainy day, I head out to the Sunday Market in quest of one particular sweet treat (although I did end up buying a whole bunch of other seasonal veggies). One of the most popular items along the 1.3-kilometer stretch of stalls…it’s the irresistibly chewy imo-mochi.
Although you can find mochi (rice cake) all across Japan, this one uniquely incorporates locally-grown, steamed sweet potatoes. The soft mochi is then filled with red bean paste and covered in golden kinako (roasted soybean powder). In Japanese, we would describe its taste as ""yasashii"", which means kind. Rather than having one overpowering flavor, imo-mochi is a beautiful harmony of earthy sweet potato, delicate rice, creamy red bean paste and sweet kinako.
One bite and you’re sure to understand why it’s a local favorite.
