A hearty, authentic taste of Kochi in a living museum

The charming town of Yusuhara is a wonderful place for a day trip or overnight stay. In addition to the several distinctive buildings designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, the lovingly-restored Yusuhara-za theater and ancient Mishima Shrine make this town a great place to explore on foot. It’s also the home of artist Rogier Uitenboogaart, who offers Japanese paper-making workshops at Washi Studio Kamikoya

However long you choose to stay, we highly recommend stopping by farm restaurant Kusabuki for lunch. Located near the Kumo-no-Ue-no Gallery just outside the town center, this country-style restaurant is comprised of a number of traditional Japanese farm buildings that have been relocated here✨

Kusabuki serves simple yet flavorful meals, made with local ingredients. Choose to sit at a table or in a Japanese-style tatami-floored room. Those looking for a real taste of Yusuhara should try soba noodles (made with 100% buckwheat flour), locally-caught pheasant, nasu no tataki (eggplant fried without batter) and mountain vegetables. If you are having trouble deciding what to choose, just go for one of their set menus to try a little bit of everything

Be sure to check out the other buildings before you leave. It’s very cool to see the tightly packed thatch in the roofs up close, which is essentially an open-air museum that offers a glimpse into centuries of life in the mountains
