Close to the city, but a world away

Earlier this month, we introduced Kuroson Gorge, which is sometimes referred to as “Japan’s most secluded autumn spot.” Located over 4 hours away from Kochi City by car, the journey is absolutely worth it, but not all of us might have that luxury of time. So, for those looking for a closer but equally dazzling autumn experience, Befu Gorge might be your spot

With that said, you still have to drive about 1.5 hours from Kochi City BUT it’s time needed for you to reach the deep mountains where untouched beauty awaits. Crank up your favorite road trip album, watch the view seamlessly transition from city to forest, and I'm sure you’ll say, “we’re already here!?”

At an altitude of about 500 to 600 meters, the mountainsides of Befu Gorge turn red, yellow and gold (typically between early to late November). You have to crane your neck to take in the entirety of the towering cliffs as you stroll up the trail towards a bright red suspension bridge. Before my visit, I always remember to remove backed-up pictures from my camera roll, uninstall apps I don’t use, clear out old cache, and do everything to open up space in my phone because I know I’ll take a bajillion photos

Unfortunately, the Momiji Chaya restaurant that usually serves local homemade food every autumn is closed for the time being. I recommend calling in advance (0887-58-4511) or keeping an eye on the Kami City website for updates (link below). However, if you are a fan of Japanese hot springs, definitely drop by Befukyo Onsen! It’s the best way to unwind after a day of exploring, and feel energized for the drive home
