Savor the season at the Sunday Market

So far, we’ve introduced a few autumn foliage spots in Kochi but we must not forget another delight that comes with the season…FOOD! For those of us in and around Kochi City, we truly feel the arrival of autumn once we see all of our favorite seasonal ingredients pop up at the Sunday Market

Yuzu citrus fruit is certainly an ingredient you can’t miss. Besides being sold fresh in its yellow, knobbly cuteness, you’ll find a variety of yuzu-flavored drinks, sauces, condiments, aisukurin (sorbet-like dessert), and more! I particularly look forward to buying homemade yuzu jam, which is perfect on bread or yogurt

Chestnuts are also very popular autumn ingredients in Kochi, especially those locally-grown along the beautiful Shimanto River. They are famously larger and sweeter than average chestnuts, which makes the most decadent Mont Blanc, kuri kinton (traditional Japanese dessert made of mashed chestnuts), etc. But of course, they can also be used in savory dishes like takikomi gohan (Japanese mixed rice)

What are your favorite autumn ingredients?
