Satisfy your yuzu needs in Umaji this autumn

Nestled deep within the mountains of eastern Kochi is the quaint and charming village of Umaji. Although it may have the second smallest population in the prefecture (only around 800 people!), Umaji is jam packed with immense charm and natural wonder. If you're an intrepid traveler seeking a destination off the beaten path, perhaps you’re already convinced to visit. But this lovely little hamlet also has a fascinating history

Over 100 years ago, Umaji prospered by supplying the nationally-prized Yanase cedar timber. The building in the picture was originally a station along the old logging railway line. Today, it is a quaint store that not only sells products made with local wood, but another material that gave the village a new lease of life after the logging industry dissolved. Yes! We are talking about the incredibly aromatic, floral and tart yuzu citrus fruit that has captured the imagination of chefs around the world today

Come explore the retro, yuzu-scented village of Umaji this autumn

Umaji Village is located under 2 hours from Kochi City by car
