A little sneak peek of pink and blue harmony

The Niyodo River is known for its azure blue waters, but with the coming of spring, the entire area is bathed in soft pink cherry blossoms too. Visitors flock to the area to soak in the beauty, capture that perfect sakura shot, enjoy festivals and other spring events to celebrate the season✨

If you’re going to be traveling to Kochi this spring, here’s a small teaser of the beauty that awaits you. And if you’re not among those lucky visitors coming to see the cherry blossoms in person, we hope you’ll still enjoy these beautiful photos of the ethereal blooms that will soon be lighting up the area. The cherry blossom forecasts are still a little way off, but typical peak viewing time for the flowers in Kochi is late March to early April

One of the places that attracts a lot of attention during spring is a shidarezakura or weeping cherry tree at the home of the Nakagoshi family, who were leaders in the area during the feudal era. This elegant tree is around 200 years old, and an interesting feature is that the blossoms start off pink and gradually change to white at full bloom! (Note that this tree is on private property, so please be respectful when visiting)

Niyodogawa Town also proudly hosts one of Kochi’s most iconic cherry trees, the splendid 500-year-old Hyotan Sakura. The 21-meter-high tree is located in Hyotan Sakura Park, close to the Niyodo River, and it has been designated as a natural monument by Kochi Prefecture! If the timing is right, you may also see shibazakura (moss phlox), which forms a gorgeous pink carpet around the Hyotan Sakura tree

We’ll be introducing plenty of beautiful cherry blossoming viewing spots all over Kochi in the coming weeks, so please join us as we count down to sakura season!
