Cape Muroto

室戸岬(Muroto Misaki)
Cape Muroto: A natural and spiritual marvel
Cape Muroto has been shaped by volcanic activity, wind and sea, and this unique landscape well deserves its UNESCO Global Geopark designation. Visitors can walk along a coastline trail that passes by the dynamic, ever-growing rock formations and subtropical vegetation. See if you can spot the fossils of ancient sea creatures in the geological formations!

As the cape juts straight out into the Pacific Ocean, this is one of the few places in Japan where you can watch a gorgeous sunrise and sunset from the same spot. At the viewing platform overlooking the trail there is a heart-shaped monument, making it a popular spot for visitors to take photos.

Cape Muroto is also an important stop on the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage, as Kukai (the Buddhist monk strongly associated with the pilgrimages) is said to have attained enlightenment in the Mikurodo Cave along the coast. Adventurous travelers can also make the trek up to Hotsumisaki-ji Temple, the 24th stop on the pilgrimage.
