Pole-and-line bonito fishing

Pole-and-line fishing for bonito, a dynamic and stunning method of landing the fish one by one, is carried out from March to November, giving chase to shoals of bonito migrating from waters to the south of Okinawa to waters off Tosa (Kochi Prefecture), the Boso Peninsula (near Tokyo) and the Sanriku region (northeastern Japan). The fishing operation represents the temperament of the people of Tosa. Boats for pole-and-line coastal and deep-sea bonito fishing sail out into the Pacific Ocean between February and March. They continue to chase after schools of bonito from waters near Guam to waters off the Bonin Islands and the Tohoku district in Japan’s northeast for about 10 months.
