Yabusame (Nonehachiman/Kasuga shrines)

“Yabusame” is a traditional Japanese ceremony involving archery on horseback. In Kochi Prefecture, the most famous is yabusame at Nonehachiman Shrine (the first Sunday of every October) to pray for a bumper crop, whch has continued since the 1192-1333 Kamakura era, and at Kasuga Shrine (Sept. 17 in the old calendar) dotted with 1,000-year-old Japanese cedar trees.
