Cruising is recommended for those who wish to further enjoy the majestic Pacific Ocean, which Kochi Prefecture looks out over. The Kochi coastline stretches for about 713 km from east to west. It includes varied terrain, such as the famous beach Katsurahama, the two capes, Muroto and Ashizuri, and the sheer cliffs of the ria coastline. By going out on a cruise, you can gaze at the 80m cliffs which rise out of the Pacific Ocean, and enjoy the sunset over the water.
Also, thanks to the complex terrain and the Japan Current, which flows from the equator, there is an abundance of ocean life that you can see while cruising. Because of the warm Japan Current, Kochi’s ocean temperature doesn’t drop below 15°C even in winter. Various types of coral such as table and leaf coral grow in this habitat, while colorful tropical fish such as butterflyfish and damselfish swim around the reefs. Kochi also possesses the first area in Japan to be designated an underwater park, and you can enjoy the natural aquarium through a glass boat due to the high degree of water transparency. If you venture farther out to sea, you can even encounter large aquatic animals, such as pods of dolphins and whales over 10 meters long. Other sights include sea turtles, which lay their eggs on Kochi’s beaches, mahi-mahi, which are popular for fishing, and stingrays.
